Schools across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin are set to benefit from book donations thanks to the launch of a new project.

Reading 4 All has been created by 4 All Foundation to ensure more reading material reaches children and young people across the communities the charity supports. Initially, the project will see books shared across the Marches Multi Academy Trust schools in the region, but charity leaders hope to eventually extend the project to more of the area’s young people.

4 All Foundation, which promotes education and employability as one of its four main aims – along community engagement, health and wellbeing, and sports participation, initially ran as part of the Marches MAT before becoming an independent charity four years ago.

Trustee Mandy Jones said: “We have already received a fantastic collection of donated books which will be distributed to trust schools, helping them provide even more opportunities for children to read, explore new stories, and develop a lifelong love of books.

“Whether a child is discovering their first favourite story, or finding a subject that sparks their curiosity, we want them to be able to access books that inspire them.”

A National Literacy Trust survey revealed more than 10% of young people aged six to 16 did not have any books in their home. Yet reading has been proven to have a wide range of life-long benefits, not only relating to education and career prospects, but also upon health and wellbeing.

Cognitive testing undertaken by University of Sussex showed a 68% reduction in stress levels simply by reading for six minutes, while 84% of children told Oxford University researchers that reading helped them learn new words relating to their feelings, in turn supporting them to express their emotions and process experiences.
